Knowing Your Divine Identity—You Are a Child of God

Becoming Like Him—Your Journey of Eternal Growth

Have you ever questioned your worth or wondered why your efforts seem so hard? It’s easy to feel small when you measure yourself against worldly standards. Without a vision of your divine identity, life can feel aimless—like a ship without a rudder. But understanding who you truly are changes everything. It transforms work into joy and striving into purpose.

You Are a Child of God

You are more than just flesh and blood; you are divine. Every gift, talent, and attribute that God possesses exists in you as a seed, waiting to grow. Like a small bud that holds the promise of a tree, your divine nature is meant to develop into full glory.

God is the Father of Lights, like unto the Sun. From Him shines forth the light of Christ, and the waters of life flow through His Only Begotten Son. The Holy Ghost is the mind of God, helping you process this light and water, teaching you in your own language and understanding how to grow. It enlightens your mind, purifies your heart, and inspires virtues like kindness, patience, and love. As you align your life with God, these divine qualities expand, filling you with His light, charity, grace, and truth.

You are not here to simply reflect His glory but to develop His character. Christ taught, "Ye are gods" (John 10:34), meaning you are here to learn how to be like Him. Through the yoke of Christ, you can become what He is—filled with love, wisdom, and divine strength to do greater works than He did.

Steps to Embrace Your Divine Nature

1. Declare Your Divine Identity
Start your day with the declaration: "I am not only a child of God; I am becoming like Him."

2. Live With Purpose
In your decisions, ask, "What would someone striving to be like Christ do in this moment?"

3. Seek His Mentorship
Emulate His character, perfections, and attributes in your actions and thoughts.

This is more than building a relationship with God; it is worshiping Him in the highest form by becoming like Him. The yoke of Christ is a burden filled with the power and light of pure intelligence, enabling you to fulfill the measure of your creation to Emulate Christ and receive all the Father has, as a joint-heir with Christ. While carrying this light may feel heavy as you recognize the darkness around you, it is also the greatest joy, for as you preach the gospel by living it and using words when necessary, others will come to know the same joy you have found.

Confidence and Holiness

When you realize that your relationship with God is already eternal—that you are His child—you are empowered to strive to be like Him. This knowledge fills you with confidence and purpose. You will act not out of fear but wanting to return the love and gifts you've received by giving them to others (1 John 4:19). Each effort to emulate Him draws you closer to holiness, aligning your heart and mind with His.

As Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, "We are not here to build a better relationship with God but to draw closer to Him by worshiping, adoring, and obeying Him." Embracing your divine identity enables you to rise to this call, striving to be holy, without spot, and one with Christ.
